There are three stages to know about:
Perimenopause is the period of time when your hormones start to shift. They can fluctuate wildly. Estrogen and progesterone start to decline over time. For some people, this transiation can take up to 10 years—which means you can have symptoms for a long time, perhaps without realizing you are in perimenopause. Perimenopause can start in your 30s.
Menopause is the full 12-month stretch without your period.
After those 12 months, you are considered to be post-menopause, though some people still refer to this as being menopausal
